In social studies, we are studying our community of Soldotna and comparing it to other communities in Alaska. We are doing this by creating timelines of historic events that happened in the different communities. To go along with creating Alaskan community timelines, the students created their own personal timeline with the help of their families. This week the students are doing a wonderful job of presenting their timeline to the class. A special thank you to the families for your help with this project.
To go along with reading the books, Gingerbread Baby and Gingerbread Friends by Jan Brett we decorated our own gingerbread houses. Thank you to all the parents that brought in candy and/or came in to help. Adam said, “decorating gingerbread houses was the most wonderful thing in the world.”
To celebrate the end of our health unit on nutrition we had a Thanksgiving Food Group Feast. Thank you to everyone who brought in the delicious food from the five food groups. It was also wonderful to see all the families that came in to enjoy the feast with us.
The 2nd grade classes had the privilege of having Mrs. Cox’s sculpture students at SOHI come over and help us make clay pinch pots. Each high school student was paired up with one or two second grade students. The second graders first observed the high school students demonstrate how to make a clay pot. They then got their own turn to get messy and make a clay pot. The high school students took the pots back to SOHi where they fired and glazed them. It was such a great experience for both the 2nd graders and high school students. A special thank you to Mrs. Cox for helping organize this!
This past Friday we had our first Great Grocery Grab to support the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank. The students, armed with the food they brought in, lined the hallways. Soldotna Mayor, Peter Micciche, and Kenai Peninsula Mayor, Mike Navarre raced down the hallway pushing grocery carts while collecting food from the students. A big thank you to everyone that brought in food. We will have one more Great Grocery Grab this coming Friday, November 18.
This week our H.M. theme stories are Owl Moon and Owls. The students read both stories and compared fiction to non-fiction. To go along with this, the students learned a step by step process of how to draw an owl. They did an excellent job! Come see for yourself as they are hanging up in the hallway. We also watched a Discovery Ed video on owls and collected owl facts. We then wrote our own opinions and facts about owls. Ask your child the owl facts they learned.
Welcome to Miss Schreur’s awesome class blog! As a school district, we are moving away from using Edline to keep you updated, and going towards the use of blogs. This blog was created to keep you informed about what is going on in your child’s 2nd grade class at Redoubt. Please explore the blog and leave me a comment about what you like and don’t like. Also, please let me know what you would like to see added to the blog.
